🔥 Who's Recruiting at the State Career Fair
The California Department of Human Resources, better known as CalHR, is running the fair with California Volunteers. The event appears on the state's official Work for California events calendar, and the registration page lists the departments signed up to send recruiters.
That list reads like a map of state government. CAL FIRE and the CHP bring the public safety side. Caltrans covers highways, engineering and maintenance yards. CalPERS, the Department of Justice, the Department of Social Services and EDD account for a big share of the office, analyst and technical work done in downtown towers along Capitol Mall and across the river in West Sacramento.
⚠️ Read This Before You Go: State Hiring Works Differently
Do not expect to walk out with a job offer. State jobs are not filled the way a private employer fills them, and knowing that ahead of time will make your conversations far more useful.
Most state positions sit inside a job classification, and you generally have to pass an exam or assessment for that classification before you can apply. Many of those exams are online questionnaires on CalCareers, the state's official hiring site. Passing puts you on an eligible list. From there you apply to specific openings, usually with the state application form and anything else the posting asks for.
So use the fair to get specific. Ask recruiters which classification fits your background, which exam to take first, and which of their openings post most often. Set up your CalCareers account before November 10 so you can ask about real postings instead of starting from zero.
📋 How to Show Up Ready
